gold 5 day course
NB: – go here for 2017 dates and to book a place
The 5 day Gold course is my long established and popular weekend course expanded to include fitting a smartLock, making and fitting an escutcheon, making a tray, lining and oiling.
And you go away with a completed box at the end of day 5.
The following is an approximate schedule and a few more images:
day 1: select timber and veneer, bookmatch and veneer panel for lid, cut simple joints on pre-converted timber for main carcass, box is glued up ‘closed’ by the end of the day
day 2: exterior of closed box is thoroughly sanded, lid and base levelled, lid cut off and inner edges smoothed, bevels cut, cut in for and fit inlays, scrape/sand lid to finish, oil coat 1 to lid only.
day 3: fit hinges, fit lock, make and fit escutcheon. The hinges and locks fitted are, of course, smartHinge and smartLock – smartWare. Go to the smartBoxmaker website for more info on this market leading hardware Note that the key shown above is not the one I supply with the locks.
day 4: cut keyhole, general sand – oil 2nd coat lid, 1st coat rest. Make tray [not pins], ring runs, 5ish – final coat all.
day 5: tray: fit pins – smooth – finish wax. Wire wool and wax main box, refit hardware, finish ring-runs before lunch, pm: line box and tray – job done!
I think it’s fair to say people are pleased with what they’re able to produce in 5 days!
